Considering that this book was a free download it is not too shabby. The book is written in poet form taking bits and pieces from Islamic, Jewish and Christian lore. Lilith is not seen as someone evil the way many early monotheists saw her but she is viewed rather as a person who is highly intelligent and highly able to love. THe author does not bother to explore any of the Sumerian origins of Lilith which is where the Jews caught wind of her. I did learn one thing. That a lullaby is meant to keep Lilith away.

The poem which is divided into books starts off with Adam and Lilith in the Garden of Eden. Lilth feels that since they both were created on the same day and same way that both should hold equal power in the Garden. Adam who has a leopard crouching at his feet does not agree. He feels he should have the power. Lilth gets no recourse so she decides to flee Paradise and explore the wide world. The angel guarding the gate tries in veign to disuade her but to no avail. Lilth wander over the Earth exploring the wild and vast landscape. It is in this wilderness that spies the wild life and the jungles. After a while of mingling with the animals shje decides to return to paradise. At the gates of paradise she is confronted by none other then Eblis himself. He is the Arabic term for Lucifer. He guides Lilith aroud and shows her his world. She is taken in by all the beauty and gifts he bestows upon her. She marries Eblis. After a while they have several children who are described as Elven, goblins and winged. They fly away from her shortly after they are born. Sorrow grips her heart as she longs for motherhood, Eblis tries offering comfort, but to no avail. Lilith finds her way back to paradise, now someone has taken her place, that person is Eve. Lilith is engraged. In aanger she steals Eve's daughter and returns her only upon the child's death.

In jewish lore Lilith was Adam's first wife. She left because she would not take the submissive position during their love making but insisted on being on top. While in the desert she copulates with animals and produces demonic offspring. God sends three angels begging her to return home lest they kill her demonic offspring. She refuses but agrees not to kill children wearing amulets containing the name of three angels. he is now a child killer. Islamic legend has her living in Damascus with Eblis.

Lilith The Legend of the First Woman Ada Langworthy Collier 9781356054299 Books Reviews

It was fine, but I really didn't want to read a poem. I thought it was a book actually discussing the legend but its more of a fancy poem that is a bit old fashioned and hard to understand.
Amid the poetry of nature's beauty and seasons cold chill, the story of Lilith's grief caused insanity and jealous crime is told. The imagery is strong. The warning of evil not being conveniently ugly with shifty plotting eyes, but beautiful, sincere, and feloniously insane.
This is very well written, BUT it is very important to understand that this is an epic poem NOT a novel.

The poem is actually quite beautiful and the writer is clearly a talented poet.

This is NOT at all what I expected when I downloaded it, so therefore I was disappointed.

The ONLY reason why I'm not giving this a poor review is because it is so beautifully written, but I expected something else.
Very interesting. I had never heard this story. It seemed quite possible. I feel allot of things are hidden from us, "for our own good". I want facts not stories. Again, must read for Christians
I loved this old school book of poems on Lilith's life. This is a book I wish had not ended as soon as it did but it was great. If you love classic poetry then this is a great book for you. It show Lilith for who she really was and made you feel for her, a childless mother type. She seemed to just want to be loved, wanted connection. She is not the woman popular TV shows has made her to be, in this book. At the end it does tell you the later myths of her as time went on, the Vampire myth and baby stealer myth. There was so much to this book that I will be reading it again, to see what I missed the first time. If you are looking for the Gothic style of Lilith, or Dark Lilith this is not for you. If you just want to read the Legend of Lilith in original form as written in passed than this is for you. I gave it five stars for being so beautifully written. Awesome awesome!!
The one thing that was not made clear to me, when I downloaded this book to my kindle was that this was written in poem form. I did not want this form. I was looking for a book with historical information about Lilith in expository prose. So I thought I would write a review to point this out.
I would have given this book more stars if it had not been for a few bothersome things. The font was far too small and light to make for easier reading. Also, the storyline was often difficult to follow due to the overly-flowery "poetic" language which was used. I understand that it is written in the style of the epic poems (such as the Iliad), but the language could have been simpler.
